Key Verse: Genesis 1:27 — “So God created mankind in his own image… God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.”
Introduction
The Bible often uses pictures from creation to communicate God’s power, principles, and purposes. For centuries, creation has been described as God’s “second book.” Augustine once said, “It is the divine page that you must listen to; it is the book of the universe that you must observe.”
Scripture invites us to learn from creation. Proverbs tells us to consider the ant and grow in wisdom, and Jesus points us to the birds of the air to remind us of our Father’s care. Creation reveals how God intends life to flourish.
For the past five years, our church vision has been Fully Alive—that every person would become fully alive in Christ so that every city would overflow with kingdom life. Our current focus, Overflowing Life, calls us to see God’s life of love in action flowing from every community, city, and nation to the next.
There are a number of pictures from Creation that can help us visualize and understand our vision for overflowing life and multiplication more powerfully and practically.
1. Creation Teaches Us About Overflowing Life
Jesus used creation pictures to describe life in Him:
• Overflowing Rivers — “Whoever believes in me… rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38)
• A Fruitful Vine — “I am the vine; you are the branches… you will bear much fruit.” (John 15:5)
Overflowing life is not static. It flows outward. It produces fruit. And it moves beyond us to bless others.
2. Multiplication Requires Reproduction and Nurture
Creation shows us that humanity has not flourished because we are the strongest, largest, or most prolific reproducers. Many species reproduce in massive numbers, yet their survival rate is low because there is no nurture.
Humans flourish because we reproduce and nurture. Family and community are essential for life to multiply in healthy ways. This natural principle reveals a spiritual truth about the church.
God’s design for multiplication is relational, intentional, and nurtured—not careless or accidental.
3. Be Fruitful and Multiply Is a Biblical Mandate
From the beginning, God commanded His people to multiply:
Genesis 1:27 — “Be fruitful and increase in number…”
The word increase also means multiply, bring abundance, make it grow, or make it plentiful. This theme continues throughout Scripture:
• God’s promise to Abraham and his descendants
• Old Testament prophecies declaring God’s salvation to the nations
• Jesus’ Great Commission — “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:18–20)
The apostles understood this mandate as fulfilled in Jesus and lived out through the mission of the church (Acts 13:47; Luke 2:23).
Multiplication through evangelism and discipleship is part of our spiritual DNA.
4. Growth and Multiplication Are Part of CityLife’s Story
CityLife Church was birthed out of a movement that believed God’s promises and acted on His command to multiply. From a single congregation to multiple sites, Life Groups, and nations, our story reflects a creation pattern—growth that leads to multiplication.
The image of an acorn becoming an oak tree, and then a forest, reminds us that what God plants in one place can multiply far beyond its original setting. Healthy multiplication takes time, nurture, and faithfulness.
We are now entering a new season of multiplication—with new sites, online church, and growing communities across Melbourne. This is not just growth; it is renewed momentum for multiplication.
Conclusion
Our vision for 2025–26 is clear:
God’s kingdom life of love in action overflowing from every community, city and nation where we live to the next
Our goal is bold:
Multiply healthy sites, Life Groups and ministries into 100 new locations by the end of 2026.
In 2026, we are adding a renewed focus on multiplying disciples, believing for a doubling of first time commitments and deeper discipleship across all sites.
Overflowing life happens when God’s life in us flows through us to others.
