Gideon was an Old Testament leader whose story is told in the book of Judges chapters 6-8. The writer of the New Testament letter to the Hebrews also includes him in a long list of Old Testament men and women who put their faith in God into action. Gideon's story is a powerful example of how small steps of faith can lead to significant victories as God turns our weaknesses into strengths (Hebrews 11:32-34).
The Story of Gideon
Gideon was the sixth judge of Israel during a difficult time when the Midianites were raiding their lands, destroying crops and flocks, and making life miserable for the Israelites. His story begins with Gideon hiding in a winepress to keep his wheat safe from the Midianites. The angel of the LORD appears to him and calls him a "mighty warrior," encouraging him to go with the strength he has and save Israel (Judges 6:11-16).
Despite feeling weak and insignificant, Gideon was powerfully reminded of his strength in God. Gideon's journey from weakness to strength involved several faith steps. For example:
• Hesitant and afraid he took a first step of faith in tearing down his father's altar to Baal and building a proper altar to the LORD. This act of obedience helped Gideon develop his faith and discover the strength he had in God (Judges 6:25-31).
• Gideon then gathered a small army of 300 men to defeat the Midianites using unconventional tactics, such as trumpets and earthenware jars with burning torches inside. He used the tools and equipment he had even when it didn’t seem very much (Judges 7:7;18).
• Having gathered his army and the limited resources they had, Gideon then stepped out into the enemy’s camp with courage believing in the word God had given him (Judges 7:18-22). He had learned to go strength with the strength he had in God (Judges 6:14).
Some Lessons from Gideons Story.
Gideon's story provides some spiritual lessons we can apply to strengthen our faith, overcome challenges and turn our weaknesses into strengths in God. Here are some of them:
1. KNOW your Identity in God and the Strength that you have in Him: Understanding who you are in Christ can give you the confidence to face any challenge. Allow God’s word to build faith in your heart. You are a person of valour.
2. DISCOVER your strength in Him by Taking Small Steps of Faith: Gideon’s journey out of weakness to strength started with small acts of obedience, like tearing down his father's altar to Baal. Similarly, small steps of faith in our own life can develop our confidence and strengthen our faith over time.
3. USE the Limited Resources you have been Given Wisely: Gideon defeated the Midianites with just 300 men using unconventional tactics and limited resources. Learn to make the most of the resources you have, and trust that God can multiply our efforts. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.
4. GO in the Strength that you Have as you Step Out in Faith: Just as Gideon stepped out in faith to lead his people, we should be willing to take bold steps in our own life. Trust that God will provide the necessary strength and support as you move forward. Go with the strength that you have.
Going with God Promises
Gideon was initially hesitant and afraid, but he overcame his fears by trusting in God's promises, putting his faith into action, and God turned his weakness into strength. Here are some promises from God’s word that can help you turn your weaknesses into strengths through Him.
• “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power [or strength] is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9.
• “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13.
• “Go with the strength that you have” Judges 6:14a
• “Your strength will be equal to your days “ Deuteronomy 33:25b
